860 clutch adjustment

Hello all --

Need some advice on clutch adjustment on a "55 860 (two stage clutch / live PTO.) The PTO clutch is slipping under heavy load but the drive clutch engagement point is already so high that it"s a real pain. My left knee is just about in my ear before the main transmission starts turning.

So far as I know the only adjustment is via the turnbuckle on the external linkage and that moves both clutch points up or down. If I move the engagement point of the PTO up I think I won"t have much pressure at all on the drive part of the clutch let alone be able to lift my foot that high.

Is there a way to shorten the distance between the PTO stage and drive stage? Am I just kidding myself and the clutch is just worn out?

Thanks in advance,

There is only on way to change the throw out distance between the PTO clutch and the ground drive clutch. The fingers have to be adjusted on the pressure plate. And you know where the pressure plate is, don't you? From what you have described, you are in need of a new clutch.

if you have freeplay adjusted to min or a hair under.. and still have issues. I'd guess the clutch is worn past mechanical ability..

The turnbuckle only adjusts the pedal height. It has no effect on free play. The free play adjustment is a stop bolt which sticks out of the arm to which the turnbuckle is attached. I've heard (but not seen) that early tractors lack this adjustment. If you don't have a stop bolt, I guess you're SOL. The stop bolt should be adjusted so you have about 3/4 inch of movement in the pedal before you feel the throwout bearing contact the clutch fingers.
