ford 5640-5000 trans swap

My cousin has a 5640 with the shuttle shift and hates it, I have a donor (for now) 5000. Would the 8 speed from my 5000 bolt into the 5640 without much trouble and would the shuttle shift work in the 5000? I know the shuttle shiter would have to be swapped between tractors, are there any other issues that might arise? Thank you for your time.

In theory it would probably bolt in place... but I suspect you're going to run into problems that would make it unfeasible. There are various mounting points on those transmissions for their respective platforms, footboards and steering pedestal on the 5000... Also.. if the powerstar is an SL it will have a dry hydraulic clutch. 5000 has a manual clutch. You'd have to mount the hydraulics to a firewall you don't have and he's have to make up a clutch linkage that would not be simple.. The clutches are different sizes that would probably necessitate flywheel changes or modifications... then you've got the issue of chopping up the platform to fit it over the transmission... and in your 5000's case... figuring how to mount the side mounted shift levers..
I can't imagine why he'd want to get rid of a 12 speed shuttle for an 8 speed even though I still like using the 8 speed...
It's just way more work and trouble than it would ever be worth.

I know this is hard to believe but he doesn't like it for loader work. He says it's to much shifting to go from a reasonable forward speed to a fast enough reverse gear, I've never driven anything but the 8-speed or dual power so I don't know what he is refering to. The tractor gets used alot for loading manure out of a pit into a v-spreader. Thank you for your input.

It's probably not the handiest transmission for loader work simply because it's a right hand shuttle. I wouldn't want a loader on mine for that reason... but otherwise I'd not worry about the ratios. I have a loader on a smaller tractor with an 8x8 shuttle but it's a left hand reverser and sticks between the knees... so it's easy to shift. That's fairly functional. The 12x12 is not so functional like that.

When you're driving into a pile of manure, you do want to be able to reverse pretty quickly. :D
