;I do some tractor pulling with our 600 ford. I decided I needed more power so I was told I could punch out the 134 to 172. Short story, My machinist said no "after I took out the motor, completely disassembled it, had it hot dipped and checked for cracks". I ended up buying a 172 short block which I'm happy with. My question, what would be a fair asking price for this block? I know I could probably put it on e-bay for what it would bring but I'm thinking more like craigs list. I'm not trying to get rich but just find some medium ground that would be fair for both myself and the buyer.

Any given month I bet that there is somebody looking for one. You need to cast a wide net to find him. I think that fleabay would be more effective.

ebay seems to be a good mechanism for determining fair price. There are a few times when only one person might be interested in an item and so they can get it for well below what it's really worth, but in most cases when there's more than one person interested, the bidding will drive the price up near the point where it would sell for outside of the auction process. You can always set a starting bid up close to what you hope to get for it and only be out the listing fee if no one bids on it, or you can even put it on ebay as a "Buy it now" item, with no auction at all and a fixed price.

For something like an engine, you either need to work with a shipper up front to find out what the shipping would be to various parts of the country and include that information in your listing, or list it as "local pickup only".

tough call
bare block or short block?
a tested block is worth more, but tough to find the right buyer.
When I am looking for an engine, and being cheap,
I see listings for bare blocks..too expensive, I'll usually buy a complete running motor for a bit more, or even an entire tractor to get the motor (tires too)
I agree with the others, to at least put it on ebay to get an idea.
local pickup only.
put a high buy-it-now price on it, but include the
'make offer' option.
(you can set it up to auto reject offers below a certain price, stops annoying 10 buck offers)
and if you are in no hurry, auto renew the ad, someone will need/buy it sooner or later.
Even if it doesn't sell, you will get an idea from the offers.

How do you know that you are happy with the 172? Have you pulled with it yet? You better take that 172 to the shop and get it opened up to 192 before getting it all together.
