power steering cylinder

4100

New User
I bought a CNH seal kit for a 4100 ford but the seals are different than originals. New kit has 3 rubber/composite,(one with a spring on one side) and a metal flange type. Any idea what order to install? I tried to post a picture but couldn't get it to attach.

You might want to read this post..I think the PS cyls are the same?

1-Snap ring
2-Scraper washer
3-Outer seal
4-Bushing
5-Inner Seal

The pic in the prior thread shows each item (with exception of inner seal) in order.

As you remove each item in the repair process make note of the order they come off.

Be aware that this kit will not fix an inner packing leak it is just a rod seal kit. For anything else it will require a new cylinder or the cylinder to be cut and repaired. They are not designed to be taken apart - but most replacement will be repairable.

Thanks. Two issues, one seal has an inner spring recessed on one side, which side faces out? the open spring side or the solid composite. second, the scraper is concave/convex, which side faces the snap ring?

Garter spring always faces the fluid side. I don't remember about the scraper but I think you will be able to tell when you remove the other one. I assume you will just reuse the snap ring.

I know the only issue I remember when rebuilding mine was removing the inner seal and I used the trick that "Hobo, NC" mentioned in the previous post about the drywall screw.

Turns out it didn't matter. The kit seals diameter were too small for the cylinder. Was able to get a standard replacement seal from a hydraulic repair shop, and reused the original outer metal keeper and wiper. Thanks for your help.

added: it was a 1/2 x 1 x 1/4 U seal .
