I have a hard time getting my '69 4000 (8 speed) into reverse. I think it's going into 2 gears at the same time. It may take 6-8 tries to get it into reverse. I guess I'll take it apart when I get it home again next winter. What should I look for to fix it?

Its not unusual for the bottom of the gear shift lever to wear down so much, that it will no longer shift correctly. Also the cover where the lever pivots can wear as well. When you move the lever to the far left or right, it must be long enough to reach the far left and far right shift rods and move them forwards and backwards and then MOST IMPORTANTLY it must return those shift rails to the center position before moving over the grab another rail.

You can weld a little bit to the bottom of the shift lever, replace the little pivot revot on the shift lever and or... buy a whole new cover with shift levers.
