engine temperature

What is the normal operating temperature for an 881 gas engine? I just put a gauge on mine and it heats up to 200+ when brush hogging. I shut it down as it approaches 200-210 as think it"s getting too hot. The normal gauge stopped working so I don"t know if its red lining or not. Thanks

200 is just right as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't start "sweating it" until it got over 225-230 or so.

The hotter it runs, the more efficient it is (to a point obviously). It also helps to boil out any condensation in the oil.

Have you checked the radiator fins to see if they might be clogged up by chaff from the brush hogging?

Thanks! Yes, there is some chaff in the radiator fins, though the tractor tended to get hot before that. I"ll have to clean out the chaff and check the timing, and maybe replace the thermostat to see if that helps.

While the 200 really isn't too hot,
a climbing temp gauge on a tractor always gets my attention.
Most brands of tractors are over-designed in the cooling.
A few degrees over the thermostat opening temperature,
and usually that's it, no matter what you are doing.

low cost things to check,
verify temp with a meat thermometer, especially if a new gauge installed.
flush cooling system
clean rad fins
make sure factory shroud is there and not bent/cut up.
Still original radiator? good, not a recore with the wrong tube style.
Check lower hose condition, for signs of collapsing.
check thermostat for temp and proper opening time.
Look in when running and above thermostat opening temp, to verify good flow from the pump.
Verify your timing advance with a light. Retarded timing under a big load will make lots of engine heat.
Check spark plugs carefully for signs of water in the combustion chambers, and/or rig up a leakdown test to make sure a small amount of combustion gases isn't getting past the head gasket into the cooling system.
Most of these don't cost nothin, and your engine will be happier.
