PTO slow to engage

"65 Ford 5000D SOS. Whenever I flip the handle to engage the PTO, it takes quite awhile to actually start turning...sometimes as long as 20-30 seconds. Once it starts, there are no issues with slowing down or anything. Any ideas where to start looking?

2. Check Filters
3. Check Engagement Linkage

My 8 speed does same thing. I will have to put plates in sometime and may be replace hyd pump since it piggy backs on it.

I don't see how that can be right. It must be either not getting the fluid or letting it out. Either way I bet it would not hold much of a load without slipping and cooking the discs. I thought that my 971 was slow at two seconds.
