Red belly hydralics

I have an old Powermaster, not sure of the exact model. But I have noticed the last few times I used it that the lift arms are weak after it warms up. They operate fine while cold but as soon as it runs about 30 minutes, the lift begins to surge up and down, (will not hold anything except full up and full down). After running a 5 foot bushhog for a couple hours, it takes everything it has to lift it but cant hold it. I can hit the drift control and force it up but it bleeds back down. any ideas of what I can do to figure out what is wrong? It gets really old having to constantly adjust my cut height on flat ground. :x

Could be a weak hydraulic pump, but it sounds like the o ring
on the lift piston needs replaced. I have a NAA that was doing
the same thing. Lift cover needs to come off to repair.

I think you have a leak in the top cover, probably the piston O-ring (and back up washer).

To check it out, remove the PTO Lever cover. The round one on the left side under the seat, it has the dip stick in it. Start the tractor and lift a heavy weight. Stop the tractor with the weight in the air and take a look inside the round opening with a flash light and maybe a mirror. If you see oil coming down from above you have a leak. Often you can pinpoint the source. Definitely look at the opening of the cylinder, If oil is coming from there, you need to replace the piston O-ring and backup washer.

We can help with top cover removal and repair. Just ask! Often it only take a top cover gasket kit to repair. This site sells them and they are not expensive.

I took the top cover off today. I removed the piston housing from the cover to see what I could find and have discovered the almost all the o rings in the cover and housing are holding a flat shape and appear very dried out. I will be replacing these, BUT I believe the piston o ring has been replaced before. The one that is on it now, does not have a washer of any kind, the piston is scuffed and chipped, and the current o ring does NOT expand beyond the piston. I do not see how it could build any pressure to begin with. I have looked on here but I cannot find any parts that I need.

Links, part #'s, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also...Is there a good way to tell what model I have? I have searched for serial numbers but have been unable to find the one that says the model code.

If it's truly a Powermaster, then it's a model in the 801 or 901 series. If it has the row crop chassis (drop down deduction gears at the ends of the rear axle and th esingle steering arm on the right side) then it's part of the 901 series and if it doesn't it's part of the 801 series. The individual models within the series just differentiate between the various transmission and PTO options and whether it has 3 point hydraulics or not, so if you know what chassis, trans and what type of PTO it has and then you pretty much know what model it is.

It has "800" on an emblem over the grill so I always assumed part of the 801 series. But it has a 5 speed trans, live 3 point hitch but not a live PTO. Everything I have found suggest a 851 or 861. My ordeal is the 861 I believe had live PTO meaning someone has put a different clutch in it. The tie rod from clutch pedal to throwout lever has 2 different holes for adjustment but I have been nervous about changing it to see what happens, (if it aint broke, dont fix it). Since all I run on the PTO is a 5 foot bushhog, I am not worried about the live PTO but would be nice to know as much as I can about it for when I start the restore this winter.

800 series is the previous series to the 801 series. They are very similar and most parts are interchangeable between the two series, but there were some slight changes.

Being an 800 series and not an 801 series, the 5 speed with non-live PTO would make it an 850.

Have you looked for the numbers on the flat spot on the engine above the starter. You should see a model number there with the serial number below it. Based on what you have said you have one of the following 850 860 851 or 861. All are very nice tractors.

For the hydraulic lift cover, the parts are the same for all these models. I think the best place on the web to find the part numbers you need is at Messicks. Just go to their web site, then select parts, New Holland Agriculture. Enter your model number (I would try 850) then select (850) 4cyl. Ag Tractor All Purpose. Select Hydraulic systems and then the section that has the parts you think you need. Really nice parts diagrams there too.

I usually use CHN parts (from Messicks) for the lift cylinder O-ring and back up washer. Also for the unloader valve O-ring if I'm changing that. For all the others, I use aftermarket parts - as available from our host's site. Much cheaper and work just fine.

Based on what you have said, I would get a lift cover gasket set from YT and piston O-ring and backup washer from Messicks. How bad are your cylinder and piston?
