Generator is toast

Hi guys;

the 12 volt generator in my 841-d diesel is truly fried. No wonder the entire electrical system is ripped out. Rebuilding on this unit is probably pretty sketchy. Can't find a part#, mfg's name , or anything on this thing.
Does anyone know what generator I am looking for on this diesel tractor?? It's about a 58 or 59 model.
I have seen 2 or 3 on Ebay that look close, but they don't say whether they are 6 or 12 volt. Just waiting on answers.
I thought I would just do an alternator conversion, but they all
say not for diesel. Anyone know of one that will work. Alternator, generator, I don't care, all I want to do is charge the battery, maybe run a couple lights.

If anyone on the forum is selling, I'm buying..... :wink:
thanks so much

Cheap and easy to wire in a delco 10SI alternator.
You can buy the kit from this site or if you can build a simple mounting bracket you can just buy the alternator and do it yourself for a lot less $.
I paid about $42 for a new alternator at Napa.
I did as a member here suggested and told the parts kid it was for a 1975 Chevy C10 PU without air conditioning. They had it in stock.
Click on the link below for a good diagram on wiring it up and a bit of info on 10SIs in general.

If you can post up a picture, we can tell you what it is. If you need brushes or bearings, they are readily availble for the Ford unit, if that's what it is. Real easy to work on.

Can't imagine why an alt kit for a 53-64 would say not for diesel, dame bracket and same size fenny 53-64, gas or diesel, diesel are all 12v. The Genny on my 941d I'm working on right now was toast, I did like ud said and popped a cheap alt on. I love Genny, but looking at 40$ reg and 90$ rebuild, vs a 29$ AutoZone alt made the decision, there is a 10-15$ core but I have some core dead gm alts I dug out of the scrap min at work. 29$ alt bolted on fine, I made very minor mods to the brackets, mostly because the po had some weird car top bracket on it anyway, now fits fine, works good, have done that on a few, my naa has the Tosco or bracket set, cost more, does same job.

Jerry,
Saw this quote
"In the UK, brown is the standard colour for a wire that is always hot and unfused."

That explains why they used a brown wire in the 65+ fords.

Some days you do learn something!
Thanks for the link!

could be. If I was selling aprts, seeings as how there are diesels from 59+ I'd sell a kit that was (-) the ignition parts too. :)

Just get a 10si alt from NAPA with the lifetime warranty. They're more like 80 bucks here plus the core... but if it ever does crap out, put it on the counter and take another one. I always just fab any brackets I need and make the wiring. It's pretty simple to wire.

Thanks for the offer to ID this generator, but it is in pieces now.
it was so packed with dried grease I had to beat it apart. The field and grd wires had the insulation burned off, brushes gone and the field coils & armature for lack of a better word were "melted". I guess its only function in life was as a big weight to help tension the fan belt. :lol:
Think I'll try the alternator route. Worst that can happen is I end up with more for the "parts I shouldn't have bought because they don't work like I'd hoped they would" box. :oops:
Thanks again

UD;
Thanks for the info, I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks also for the wiring schematic, I think I can handle that. Not sure what I've got but I think I have a charging lite [b:c97b83dc70]and [/b:c97b83dc70]and an amp meter. Either/Or will do. I know the temp gauge works, thats the one that counts.
It doesn't even show that a resistor is needed.....??
I'll keep you posted on the results.

No problem. Hey, if that old genny has a pulley on it with the fan and for a 1/2" wide belt, I would be interested in buying from you. The pulley, that is.

Thanks,
Kevin

Guru;
I'm like you, Gen, Alt, Hamster Cage, 12 volts is 12 volts. If I have to fabricate brackets, so be it.
Thanks for your advice, I'm taking it. Sometimes free advice[i:93a474dc79][b:93a474dc79] is[/b:93a474dc79][/i:93a474dc79] a good thing. :D

Why pay 80$? autozone lifetime warranty is 45$... pretty much same warranty.. and autozone even keeps yer info on file. Orielies lifetime was 48$

Because that's what they cost 'here'. I suppose I could get it a little bit cheaper at Canadian Tire... and when it does crap out I can go in there and fight like hell to get what I'm owed... or I can pay a few bucks more and go to NAPA and it comes with a guarantee I know will be honored. We don't have 'Autozone' here. We have NAPA and CARQUEST, the afformentioned 'Crappy' Tire and some independants.

most of the big players down here are pretty good on warranty. that includes napa and car quest, autozone and orilies. napa is the $$king$$ of them all. with even car quest being mor einline with autozone prices. I guess it's true.. the farther north you go.. the more everything costs..

One of the main reasons things cost more here is because we're never given fair dollar exchange... It's quite common for parts pricing to sit at 20% below bar even when our dollar was 10% over par. It's a great profit center...

Rod

They're plain simple thieves.... they never price parts in real time. I've never seen us get better than about 80% exchange, particularly from NH, even at 10% over. Even if we buy direct from a US supplier we still get whacked with brokerage fees that often start at 60 bucks, plus freight, plus duty if it's applicable... so there's no way to win here. You just pay.

Rod

Ouch,.. I understand -reasonable- exchange rate fees need to be charged.. Or at least I can see a reason... But nit the ripp off rates...

with todays purchases being mostly electronic on credit card these days, even the conversion fees seem -old school-
