Looking for a little help here. I just finished up cleaning and painting up our grandfathers 1956 860 after it had been sitting for 12 years. I got it to start and run by by-passing the 6 volt gen as it was dead! so rather then put more money in the 6 volt system I switched it over to a single wire 12 volt system. This time I got it running but after about 10min.s the header and muffler became red hot! I mean really really hot! Pretty sure it has nothing to do with the 12volt swap. I also replaced/ cleaned or rebuilt the carburetor, points and condenser, new plugs, new rotor, new header ( old one had holes in it) air filter.. really went though very thing cleaning repairing and painting as required. Help please as I don't want to crack a head over ruin the tractor.

Sounds like a good project.
Generally it's called an exhaust manifold, not a header though we know what you meant.
I would check your timing.

Retarded timinig will cause the exhaust to run excessivly hot.

Verify static timinig and proper operation of the centrifugal advance mechanism.

I would start by checking the timing as well. A lean mixture can also make it run hot. Wouldn't hurt to check that as well. (A leak between the intake manifold and head can cause a lean condition)
