850 manual steering gear

I mentioned that the steering in my new-to-me 850 had quite a bit of play and that the steering wheel/column screw up and down as the wheel is turned. I got some good advice and I'm digging into it now. The manuals indicate that the steering gearbox should be removed from the transmission case and worked on in a vice. I don't have a good bench or vice, and I'm wondering if it wouldn't be just as easy to leave the whole thing bolted to the transmission case and overhaul it in place. Any problems with approaching it this way?

Also, regarding the recommendation that 0 or 00 grease be used in place of gear oil to prevent leakage (my box has stopped leaking, so I suspect that my oil level is now below the leaking sector seals) - can this grease be poured into the box or do I need to replace the plug with a grease fitting? If so, what size fitting is required?

yes, you can USUALLY do the boxes right ont he tractor unless you are punching out a lower race for the boxes without a blind bottom recess.

i simply put a zerk inthe top fill plug.. it's like 1/8 pipe i think..
 

Thanks Soundguy. I've got everything away from the steering box: hood, dash, air cleaner, electronics, battery holder, etc. Probably more than necessary, but everything needs a bit of cleaning and the wiring is a mess. I have to ask the seller what he did with the steering before I took the tractor away - everything I've pulled apart has clearly been recently apart and lubricated. The steering wheel and nut, which looked like I would have to chisel apart from each other, both came up with very little convincing. He was clearly in here, but whatever he did isn't quite working.

I'll pick up a pitman arm puller tomorrow and see about getting the arms off. After that I guess I should know what parts I need to order...
 
By the time you have loosened or removed all of the necessary items to work on the box, four more bolts out and you can have it setting on the bench and have a clear excess to everything .My opinion only , of course.

While I'd only have to put in another 5 minutes to pull the whole box, I just don't have a bench that's better than the 850's chassis! I can certainly throw something together if necessary, but the truth is that I only became a tractor mechanic about two weeks ago and I'm having to buy/find/build the required tools and equipment as I go :D

Slightly off topic, but since I'm replacing the wiring when I put this back together, now is the time to ask... What gauge wire and insulation type are required for this electrical system? It's still the original 6-volt system. The battery leads are good, but the wiring to the generator, starter, solenoid, lights and instruments are coming out. There are way too many dead ends, splices, nicks, etc. to be worth reusing as far as I'm concerned.

well, I hit that snag...

got the box pulled off per Wayne's advice - it allowed me to pour the oil and mangled lower thrust bearing out and get a look into the clutch chamber that had been weeping oil. The oil seems to have been coming from the steering box rather than the transmission or crank case. That's the good news.

bad news is that I got careless on the steering box disassembly and sheared the ears off one of my sector shafts that interface with the adjuster screw. I won't make that mistake again, but I'm sure kicking myself for making it in the first place...

so what are my options? It looks repairable, but I don't know a machinist I would take this to and I doubt it could be repaired for less than the cost of a replacement. I don't see the sectors sold here. Sources? What tractor models share the same steering gears?

Ok, so I'm reassembling my steering box but I'm a little confused about some of the parts I bought. Specifically,

Steering Sector Kit Part Number S.67109 http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Ford-800_Steering-Sector-Kit_S67109.html

and Seal, Steering Gear, Sector Shaft Part Number D5UZ3591B http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Ford-800_Seal-Steering-Gear-Sector-Shaft_D5UZ3591B.html

My parts manual shows 3585 (PACKING - Steering Gear Sector Shaft) and 3591 (RETAINER - Steering Gear Sector Shaft Packing) which I believe are replaced by the single bagged part (D5UZ3591B) pictured. The loose part shown on top of the bag was supplied as part of the sector kit, and is the same as the parts that I removed from my gearbox directly outside of the sector bushing 3576-A.

Do I need both parts? If so, does the seal (in the Tisco bag) go in first followed by the rubber ring (on top of the Tisco bag)?
