A vs B regulators

B reg on tractor now, smoked the generator. Generator repaired and also want to replace the regulator. TSC has a "A" reg. what is the difference and could I use it? It is a 1962 641, 6 volt positive ground. Thanks, Steve

ifference is that one supplies power to the field & the other grounds the field. Not interchangeable & must match the generator type.

I believe a napa echlin VR 951 is the 6v B circuit unit you need.

Looking at the back of a vreg. if there is a bias resistr between field and armature.. it is B ckt. If there is a bias resistor between field and ground.. it is A ckt.

( Note. B ckt regs may have -2- bias resistors, depending on design.. but one will be field to armature.. )

The way Soundguy explains it, ( and the fact it is marked "B")
it is in fact a B that was in there. I took the generator to be
overhauled which they did. To Jmor, how do I find out which
generator I have? I put this regulator in 7 years ago and I think
I just pulled it off the shelf and had no idea about A or B regs
then. Just trying to get it right without spending a lot more cash
on this. Thanks, Steve

Thanks Soundguy. It is a B as you described, plus I found a mark saying it was a B. Now just trying to determine which one I need as I had changed this regulator before without knowing there was a difference. I guess if the one in there lasted 7 years, I guess it was correct. Thanks for your help. Steve

I would ask the guy who overhauled the generator. He might even be able to order or sell you a VR. He could also test the one you have.
