Ford 4500 S-O-S

I'm told all the Eggsperts are here, so I'm looking for assistance.

Have a 4500 backhoe/loader combination with S-O-S.

Last time used, after digging some stumps, went to move tractor and when shifting there was the "slightest"
bit of movement, then nothing. First I though it was the shift cable, but after further inspection all was well there.
Moved on to pressure checks, and found the following:
From S2 port, Park,R1,R2,1,2,3,4 shift locations
show NO pressure.
Neutral DOES show the recommended 210/220PSI.
It's not a question of low pressure, but NO pressure.

At least the 210 in neutral shows that the pump and the clutch are driving the tranny.

Any thoughts as to opening tranny and looking for what??

As complex and precise as that transmission is get a manual and go through all of their trouble shooting tables. Obvious questions does it have the right kind and amount of fluid in it? When was the last time the filter was changes? Does your PTO still work? I cared for a 4 cylinder 2000 SOS in the late 70's early 80's, it broke the return spring on the clutch (excuse me "inching pedal"), I fixed it, the parts I broke getting to the spring cost as much as the spring. I'll warn you it's bad scary under those covers, parts were hard to get in the early 80's, hasn't gotten better since then.
 

Yah! Well! You sure you're not on S3? Those readings would be normal on S3. Furthermore, no component except Band 3 is common to the ratios you listed!

My hunch is that you best look elsewhere for your issue. Traction disconnect uncouple?

According to the manual, S2 is the lower of the two pressure ports, even in the picture...
Is this not correct??

Traction disconnect hasn't been touched,
and is still pinned in the 'down' position.

I didn't check the pressures on the other port,
since manual indicates that "system diagnosis can usually be made ...at S2 location only.

You're thinking I got the wrong pressure port?

I understand that it's complex, but I do have a manual,
which pointed me to the pressure checks initially.
(after checking for broken shift cable)

I did replace the filter just prior to checking pressure, and oil is full.

I never use the PTO, so can't answer that question,
and the output shaft is covered (under backhoe)

I'm hardheaded old school, and would expect that is "was" working, and I can put it back in that condition......(within $$ restraints, of course)

but I'm certainly open to suggestion at this point :)

That's exactly what I'm thinking. If you were at S2 the readings should be 205 to 210 in all the ratios you listed except Park. Park should be zero @ S2. For S3, the same ratios are involved but N should show 205 -210 like you do and P should show 0. It is obvious that your transmission can build normal pressure.

You are correct in the picturing of the pressure ports however.

I'd get pressure gauges on all three ports simultaneously if I could. However, I might first try a band adjustment to see if all bands can be adjusted per spec.

Well, havta scrape up another higher pressure guage to try that.....
BUT, you say the lower IS the S2 port, Hmmmmmm.

I'll check the bands, but alas, gonna take time to get back and forth to the machine (at daughters house)

Reading some old posts here, there was some mention of the traction coupling not being connected to the lever.....
Is it possible coupling has disconnected itself
by jogging back and forth over the years?

Well, alas, after giving it some thought, if the TDC
was off, the unit would roll on it's own. It's parked on a slight grade now,
and there's no hint of it being able to roll on it's own.

I'll let you know about pressures / bands
Monday/Tuesday ....

SHOULD I get that far, any cautions about pulling
cover off TDC housing?..... Thanx.
