4400 power steering pump

Ken has the old style pump on a 4000.
Pressure on it is only about 300 psi.
So we are thinking about replacing it with a new style integral pump.
Looking on Ebay they are not too expensive but they list them for 2/3/4/5000s and say you need to adjust the pressure relief valve for your model.
How does one adjust the pressure on one of these?
I think a 4000 uses about 1100 psi doesn't it?
As always, TIA for the great info from this board.

Edit: I meant 4000 in the title.

Tractordata.com has a lot of bad information.

I believe that most of the aftermarket ones sold these days come pre-set to 1100 psi. You have to shim the relief valve to get a lower pressure.

According to the parts site the early style pumps were 850 psi on the 4000 ag models with the single external cylinder and the later ones were 1100 psi with the cylinder inside the steering column. If that 4000 has the external cylinder I would add some shims.According to my I&T FO-31, each 0.005 of shim thickness should change it by 35 psi, so 1100 - 850 = 250 psi change needed, divided by 35 psi = 7, times 0.005 = .035 total shim thickness needed. The shims only come in 0.010. 0.015 and 0.060, so you it looks like you would need to use 2 of the 0.010 plus 1 of the 0.015 to get the 0.035 thickness you need.

Ultradog - I read 4000 in your post, but I just noticed that the title to your thread says 4400. If it has the 4400 external cylinder then you shouldn't need to shim anything, as both the early and later style pumps were 1100 psi on the 4400's.

Pressure is adjusted by adding/removing shims in the relief valve. Available in .010" and .015" thicknesses. Each .005" varies the pressure by ~50 psi. FO31 manual shows 850 psi for the early style with the linkage cylinder; 1100 psi for late style with integral p/s.

Sean is right - 35 psi per .005" of shim. I looked in the FO41 manual first.
But wouldn't you take shims out to lower the pressure?

The I&T manual just says how much the 0.005 shim thickness changes the pressure by, not anything about removing or adding to lower or raise the pressure, but I didn't even think about it and just assumed that adding shims would lower the pressure, but you may be correct that taking shims out would lower the pressure. Makes more sense that way as a thinner shim pack would put less force on the spring so the spring could then allow the valve to open at a lower pressure.

Thanks fellows.
Ya know...
I never even thought to look at the I&T manual.
In fact I've never even read the section on ps pumps - ignored it, skipped it, missed it somehow.
Guess I have something to do one of these evenings.
