One wire Delco charging issues

Have a one wire 10SI on the 861, converted before I got it. Sometimes it will charge and sometimes not. RPMs don't seem to make a difference (rev it up sometimes it will excite, sometimes not). Any thoughts on why? Is the internal regulator possibly bad?

Replaced bearings in the steering box recently and noticed some strange wiring under the dash. V reg still there but a jumper wiring it to itself, etc... Other weird stuff. May "undo" some of the wiring as it is pretty odd...

dyke out the old wireing and start over. wireing an old tractor takes a few feet of wire and some terminal ends.

onthe alt. see if you can run it like a 3 wire and if it makes it stable.

jump #2 to charge stud. Hit #1 with bat power after rpm is above 400.. see if it charges consistently

Before we type a book of all the things it might be hack out all the old wiring and wire the alternator the way it was made to work using a 3 wire setup.

That's the diagram I used on my 640. Pulled out the rat's nest, rewired using solder and heat shrink wrapping around the connectors and it works great. No more guessing if it's going to work. Didn't take long either.

Glad you're still posting, John. I used your comprehensive post in the archives to re-wire my 841 a couple of months ago. Runs great! Very helpful! I went front knowing next to nothing about how to wire a tractor to being able to do it all on my own thanks to you!

Wired the "automobile type" starter switch (start and on switches on the same key). Very pleased with it!

The only problem with wiring it like that is you eliminate the neutral safety switch...I would rather keep the safety switch, but that is just me.

Look again - it is still there.

Read again...he bypassed it with a key switch.
