'64 4000 Gas. Hit starter button and hear "click". Hit it over & over til 8th or 9th time, and she fires right up :) Sometimes she fires right up without "Click". Is this likely a solenoid problem?

Thanks!

If you hear a click every time, then the primary circuit for the solenoid should be working (battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter switch, starter switch to ground and through ground back to the battery). The internal contacts for the secondary circuit in the solenoid may be dirty or not making proper contact all of the time, but it may be the brushes in the starter itself are worn or dirty, or it could be a loose or dirty connection somewhere in the circuit.

I would start with the wiring connections. Make sure that both ends of both battery cables are clean, bright and tight, and the same for the cable from the solenoid to the starter. If the problem remains after making sure that all of your electrical connections are clean and tight, then try jumping from the battery directly to the starter. Does the starter operate every time you jump it? If not then the problem is in the starter. If so, then the problem is most likely in the solenoid. But it could still be a problem with a bad wire somewhere that's not visibly bad on the outside but might have a corroded or broken conductor inside the insulation.

aybe, but worn out starter brushes can act that way, where they finally make good enough armature contact to make it spin. Possibly loose/bad cables connections, too.

easy to test.

1st make sur ehte small terminal is getting good ground from the thumb switch. if it is, then next test the solenoid. does pressing the thumb button, then you get a click, and does power show up on the starter side using a test lamp or vom. if yes, then deffinately look at starter health.

another shade tree test is to press and hold starter button.. if you get a click, then tap the side of the starter with a hammer light to medium ( don't wail on it.. ).. many times a tap gets them going.. if so.. refer to jmors explanation... probably bad brushes.. etc.. )
