Valve Seat Recession - Ford 4000 3cyl Diesel

Hi all, does anyone know if there is a maximum allowed measurement between the cylinder head face and the top of the valves? I ask this as I presume if the valves recess too far into the head, compression will be lowered.

You are correct on the theory, I have seen it make a HUGE difference in starting, but do not know the specifications.

I took the attached picture from my 545 (201 ci diesel) Ford OEM manual. It is the only reference I found that dealt with anything resembling valve protrusion/recession. The specifications chapter in the engine section provided no insight that I located.

The manual says it covers everything for all Ford 3-cylinder diesel and gas engines. I don't know how much the 201 changed over the years, but the 545 started production in 1978 if I remember right so I can't say if the 4000 3 cyl is identical.

Hopefully someone else can vouch for the information from personal experience. I have not dealt with this myself.

The deeper the valve is recessed will lower compression (it increases the volume of the combustion chamber) and may result in hard starting, especially in cold(er) weather. Or so I've heard but it would make sense.

There was a service bulletin about that...I'm going off memory here, but it seems like the spec was .060" minimum, and around .085" maximum. If you can end up with 70 something, you should be just fine.

Hi, your not far off! Went to my local NH dealer and they looked up some old tech bulletins and found engines 1964 - 1990 .059" to .084" inlet and exhaust.

Thanks,
David
