Oil pan gasket

I am getting ready to put the oil pan back on my
5000, and wanted to know if i would need
gasket seal along with/instead of the regular
gasket. There are some "gaps" where the
timing gear cover and block meet that look like
a gasket won"t do by itself. When I took it off,
there was gasket seal there already. If I need
some, what is the best kind? Thanks

When I did my Ford 4000, I used gasket and non hardening RTV, color was blue.

I did not do my oil pan in the shop, I did it in the field, 2 feet from the stump that hit the drain plug and started a leak when I was bush-hoggin in the wild I was clearing for pasture. It sat there for a week while I rounded up the parts. Laid a piece of cardboard under the tractor and went to work. Thats the bad news. Good new is I have no leaks.
Our repairs are different. My challenge was the two front bolts with no clearance, that I had to cut off the heads to get them out, because the bolts were too long. Went back in fine with right length bolts. But that did tell me my tractor had received an out-of-frame rebuild. Those long bolts would only go in before the engine was set.
Non-hardening RTV and gasket.

There are a bunch of different gaskets available for those. I was told that there were a lot of tries at making it so that it would not leak. There was a tendency for there to be a little movement between the pan and the block because of the pan being "structural". The 9000 is the same way, I opted for the $9.00 gasket instead of the $90.00 one and put the permatex that comes in the tube on the pan surface. It has been about four years now and no leaks despite some pretty good stress.

The problem with that aviation sealer is that you don't want to be the poor soul who has to take it back off in the future. Any gasket glued on by that stuff needs to be physically ripped in half to get apart. But that's not the worst part. Then you need to scrape the old stuff off!

someone at one time glued a cork pan gasket onto the underside of the engine on a 660 i was working on. not to the pan itself. so I had to lay there under the darn thing with a razor and gasket scrapper getting the stuff off.

on the plus side. i've never had a leak failure using it.

but yeah. next guy probably cuss ya..
