I'm putting new sleeves and pistons in. I have the head off and probably need new valves. The estimates for having the head ground, checked and valved are $500 - $1000. There was no indication of a cracked head before disassmbly. Do y'all think it is neccessery to have it ground checked or can I get by with seating new valves myself? I do not want to shortcut a rebuild but $1000 is 1/3 of the way to just another tractor.

I was really struck by the cost of getting valves done on the last head that I took in. I still believe in getting them surfaced because it is too likely that it could have a problem. Depending on how you plan to use the tractor I would be looking at replacing guides and lapping the valves by hand. It is not like the multi-angle grinds on newer engines.

Tip the head up side down and fill the combustion chambers with penetrating oil and leave it set overnight. If they are still full in the morning, leave them as is. You're not farming "400 acres" with this tractor ,are you? I'll probably get flack from this statement, but it works for me!!
