Broke Busted and disgusted! 4610 Rant!

Just got home from the shop. I picked up a nice 4610 diesel with a cracked block this winter. The motor had JUST been overhauled and had had a new crank in it. I put an engine kit in it, sleeved the hole, and remfg the head. I HAD THE HEAD PRESSURE TESTED AND MAGNAFLUXED. I got it running today, and it was perfect. I ran it two or three times for 10-15 seconds to adjust things. When I got back from lunch, I poured antifreeze in it and fired it up to take it outside. It started puking antifreeze out of the rear cylinder so badly It would cover the tractor with haze in 20 seconds...Im not sure at this point if its the head or the block. The block showed no cracking before assembly and during boring..Its not the leaking that is bugging me tonight, its the fact that I just put the *($#&! together...Sorry! I had to rant!

I have seen this before. The block cracks at the bottom of the water jacket, between the cylinder and the outside wall of the engine. It is almost impossible to see. I repaired it by cleaning it the best I could and working JB weld into the crack with a long screwdriver. It held long enough to get rid of the tractor. so I don't if it is along time fix.

Does get rid of mean you sold it to someone who thought that he got a decent tractor for his money? Or did you scrap it?

If the crack is on the outside you can weld it up.
Make sure the crack is clean, then grind it out and weld it back up. You can grind the weld back flat to make it not so noticeable, or leave it as is.

from the way it was typed.. sounds like he shafted somebody...
why jb weld a crack if you are scrapping a machine

Its puking it out the head...there is antifreeze in the intake and obviously in the Ex. Just the rear cylinder. No apparent cracks in the cyl wall (I had just bored it .020) (Youd have thought Id see it. It really shows up) The head gasket looks like it did when I installed it (oops, I DID JUST install it) sooooo....Back to the machine shop to retest the head.

Did you clean out the bolt holes in the block before installing the head?
The holes tend to get corrosion built up. The corrosion can be in the threads or building up from the bottom. Any of that crud in the way can make you think it is properly torqued down when the head is still not tight to the block. I always chase the threads with a tap and blow them out with compressed air before reassembly. I also wire brush all the bolts and replace the ones that are too stetched or buggered up.

If you just had the head done and the machine shop did their job well it should be OK.
