801 sos manuals

Hi I just got a ford 801 SOS tractor could not pass it up for the price. Everything works all gears work I'm not sure what manuals I should get having a SOS tranny any help would be great.

It depends on which S-O-S transmission it has. The original 801 series had a over running clutch (ORC) design that allowed the tractor to free wheel going down hills, and they switched over to a direct drive clutch (DDC) design in the beginning of 1963, but many of the earlier tractors were retro-fitted with the later version transmission. To tell which one you have, look on the side of the transmission housing for a raised casting number. If the number is 312259 then you have the earlier ORC clutch design. If the raised casting number starts with C0NN or C3NN then it is a later DDC design.

As to what manuals you should get, definitely get the 801 series Operators manual, as that will tell you how to operate the tractor, as well as how to change the fluids and filters plus some other routine maintenance type of items.

If you plan to do all of the work on it yourself, then you should also get a service manual. If you have the earlier ORC version of the S-O-S transmission, then the standard service manual for the 801 series will cover everything in/onm that tractor. If it has the later DDC version of the S-O-S, then you will also need the S-O-S supplemental service manual, which states that it is for the 4 cylinder 2000 and 4000 series, but that is what the DDC transmissions were actually designed for, so that is the proper service supplement for the DDC transmission whether it is in a 601/801 series or a 4 cylinder 2000/4000 series.

I/M pretty sure it is the orc because it free wheels in the lined out gears on the shifter but will check the case. Thanks hate to spend money on manuals I don't need ha.
