TDC Ford 4000 3 cyl diesel

I'm trying to adjust the valves and haven't done it but maybe once in my life and never on my tractor.
the owners manual says TDC is marked on the flywheel and that you can find the mark via the flywheel inspection hole which i found but I have questions.

1. What does the TDC mark on the flywheel look like? I found one spot with a bunch of numbers and at another point a black mark- kinda oblong.

2. Which cylinder is #1

3. I can't get my feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve tip of any of the valves? I haven't turned any adjustment nuts yet.
Thank you!

I don't bother with the timing marks.
With the valve cover off, turn the engine over by hand till you see the intake valve close then turn the engine another half turn and you should be close enough to TDC to set valve clearance. Repeat for all 3 cyls.
#1 cyl is always the one closest to the radiator.

how do i turn the engine over by hand? by grabbing and pulling the fan blades, if so does one fan revolution = one engine revolution?

Look at the front pully on the engine and the pully on the fan.
You will see that because the pullys are not the same diameter one rev of the fan will not equal one rev of the engine.
You will need to use a 1 1/8" wrench to turn the engine over using the bolt on the front of the pulley on the engine.
Sometims you can get in there with a box end wrench and get about 1/6th of a turn at a time.
Or, you can use a socket and the right combination of extensions and reach through the center of the bolster and use a rachet or breaker bar.

Got em all adjusted, I must have loosened this one before I cracked it as the feeler shows it is adjusted correctly. I don't think it is cracked further down and will be fine.

i would say it took between 1/8th and 1/4 of a turn on all of them

I was worried if it is further cracked it would break up later and damage the engine but my local mechanic says it would have fall down into the oil get sucked up in the oil pump to damage the engine and that is not likely so not to worry.
One of my manuals mentioned a box wrench, now i think know why, I used an open end and noticed it wasn't a real tight fit and i didn't have it all the way on the nut and it exerted pressure in the wrong spot causing the nut to crush.

lots of water on the valves?? you may want to run it for a few minutes and then change the oil...

Thanks for the observation, that water you see is rain sprinkling, and i changed the oil just prior to the pic.
