On my 860 tractor I am putting on a one wire alternator to convert it over to 12 volt But I cant remember what to do about the coil Can anyone tell me

The coil needs to be changed to a 12 volt, 3 ohm internal resistor coil. There is a great article right here on this site in the research and info area called Ford 2000 & 4000 12 volt conversion that I have used to convert two tractors so far with no problems. I did not use any kit, I rounded up the items seperately. The beauty of the one wire marine grade alternator is that you do not have to rev the engine up to excite the alternator.

I've always just used a resister for a late 50s Chevy you can get them from NAPA for about $10 and use the same coil. Just swap the small leads so the polarity is right.

You CAN keep the old 6v coil and add a resistor.. OR you can get a new coil. napa IC14SB is about a 15$ coil, and needs no resistor. It's what I use on all my 12v gassers.

As for the 1 wire alt. I find them less desireable.

see if you can make it run 3 wire. IE. jump charge stud to #2 spade, then with it running at 400 rpm, hit #1 spade with power and see if the alt turns on. if it does, get a 194 lamp and run a line from the coil side of the key thru the lamp to the #1 and have a 3 wire alt...
