65 ford 4000 pto

Just bought a 4000 ford and noticed the PTO is always on... I can't have that. I've read about hydraulic fluid levels being low... a new PTO brake or plate needing to be replaced. Is the a video somewhere or pictures that may help with the repair. Thanks for any help you may offer.

The manual transmission with 4 low and 4 high is generally called an 8 speed.
And the 10 speed powershift is called a Select O Speed. I don't know where the select o matic term came from but it's not Ford.
As for your pto, take an 8' 2X6 and wedge it into the 3 point linkage and pry against the pto shaft and see if you can stop it with the pto off.
If you can stop it that way it means that your pto brake is shot. If you can not stop it it means something else. But try that and post back.
Ps,
Welcome to the board.

10spd but NOT SOS ??

are you perhaps counting 8 forward gears and 2 reverse as a 10speed?

that's an 8spd twin stick just to clear things up.

if you count reverse.. then SOS are 12speeds. ;)

It has 2 shifters... hi low and gears ....8 total speeds forward and 2 reverse...
Thanks for heling me clarify that...

(quoted from post at 07:12:04 03/23/14) Conventional wisdom says your PTO brake pawl is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Yes we tried the 2x4 trick and could not stop it... so how big of a job is it to fix...how far do you have to take apart?
Something someone with some knowledge can do? (Not me... a friend...Haha) Thanks everyone for the help and the welcome...by the way we have an 8n or 2n??? we are looking to sell or trade if anyone is interested...still looking for a ford 2000, 3000, or 4000...

If the 2x4 didn't stop it then that means the clutch is not disengaging, so it's most likely not the brake. It's most likely the clutch plates are warped so they don't disengage. Slightly less likely is the clutch spring is broken. If you're going to have it apart to fix whatever is wrong with the clutch anyway, you should probably do the brake at the same time since it's been spinning with the brake applied and is likely worn as well.

I'm afraid thats kind of what we were thinking. Was hoping nothing that serious.... But do appreciate all the help...
Funny thing there are three guys (in my shop) that should know how many forward gears it has... one said 6, one 8, and one 10... Finally one sent me a picture and yes it has 8 forward...

Yes it has 8 forward gears and 2 reverse with two shifting levers. I did put a 2x4 against it and it wouldn't stop...would chew the 2x4 up. I did try to turn it when it was not running and it will turn...someone wanted to know that???
I guess it sounds like the clutch no the break from what I've been reading. That means we have to separate the tractor... I guess maybe a job for someone else. And put in most the new parts as long as we are in there..
Thanks again for all your help!!

sounds like a control valve issue.. it is staying powered.

if it was a piled up or warped clutch.. it would have been stiff when off.

As the owner of an industrial manual generally referred to as a 6x4, (3 forward, 2 reverse, + high/low range)

I'd call that an 8x2, but plain 8 speed is the common terminology.
