ford 4000su questions

Bought a 70 4000 SU basket case. I am overhauling the engine, when I pulled it, the bell housing was full of what I believe was power steering fluid. The gal I bought it from said the tractor had a very leaky power steering unit. The fluid seemed to thin for engine oil or tranny fluid. My plan is to reseal the power steering unit. Am i on the right track?

Regards,

Joe

What color is it?
Most people are running the Ford/New Holland recommended 134D transmission/hydraulic fluid in their transmission and rear end.
It is pretty light - like about 40 wt.
In fact most of us here also run it in their power steering systems as well.
My guess is you have worn out input shaft seals on the front of your transmission and that is the source of the oil.

The color was black, It had been sitting for quite some time. May as well change the transmission seals while I have it open

Thanks

I've gotten so anytime I split one of these Fords I automatically replace those seals.
Also, more than a few of us here have split one or those 3 cylinder tractors only to have the soft plugs on the back of the head and block crap out and start leaking within a year or less.
Never again will I split one without replacing those too.
I think there are 3 of them. One in the head and two in the block - one is behind the flywheel.

Black probably means engine oil. Replace the rear
main seal while you have it split. Don't know how
p/s fluid would get to the bellhousing, unless it
was leaking into the engine first, then out a
leaking rear main seal.

Black oil in the clutch housing can just as easily be hydraulic oil colored with clutch dust.
