Ford 8N with Front Mount Distrubutor Questiion

Neighbor called yesterday and asked me if I can get his 8N with a front mount distributor started. He put a new battery in it and said it's getting gas. I check to see if it had spark at the spark plugs and it had none. Checked the ignition wire with my test light leading to the coil while it was cranking and it didn't go off and on while the points were opening. This told me the points were not making contact. If they were making good contact the test light would of went off and on but it didn't. So we pull the distributor out and put in a new set of points. We then found out the new points wouldn't even touch the lobes on the shaft. So they didn't open. Well we ended up buying a new distributor today for $200 and the lobes on that distributor were almost non-existent and the points only made continuity on 3 of the 4 lobes. I've never seen anything like this. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've seen similar results from cheap points.
NAPA/Echlin or Standard Blue Streak premium points fit better.
You also set the timing on those front mounts while it's on the bench.
Can you send the new distributor back?
At most the old one probably needs new bushings.

I gonna try and see if I can return the new distributor. We picked it up at a local repair shop where the owner specializes in the older "N" series ford tractors. Gonna look into electronic ignition system for it. If not I may buy the tractor from my neighbor and just part it out.

Parting it out over an ignition problem sounds extreme.
Where is it located? Maybe someone close could use it?

Suggest you reconsider parting out. I put a new set of points in my 2n and it still starts good 10 years later ! In my opinion no need to go electronic. Get a good distributor, set the points on the kitchen table, and it will run and run and run ad finitum.

Some of the aftermarket points have contacts that are to tall so that they can't be adjusted. Go to an auto parts store and get a set of Echlin or Blue streak points and try them in the original distributor.
