Duct tape works if the tire surface is relatively clean and smooth. I didn't tape off my last paint job and my hand slipped while painting the right front tire. Not real happy about it, but it's a worker and after a couple of days in the field it should wear off.

Not what you want to hear but...
I usually remove the tires, have the rims sandblasted, then prime and paint them before putting the tires back on. Lets you check for rust inside while you are at it.
Especially important if they are loaded.
Otherwise spend some time with some masking tape.
FWIW, when I see tires with a lot of overspray on them I always assume the seller did shoddy work on whatever else he fixed on the tractor and estimate it's value accordingly.

as said.

debead tires and do rims up good.

otherwise.. either mask them. or use tire grease applied with a paint brush.. then wash off after paint cure.

or overspray the tar out of them then use tire paint...

lotsa options depending on yer needs and skills and time. and budget

jar o vasoline and a paint brush goes a long way on a worker..

This is the way to do it. Other than that it will look half a&*ss. Little more work up front but looks MUCH better.

The best way is to remove the tires so as to properly prep and paint the rims inside and out.

I'm in total agreement, best way is to take the tires off and do the
rims inside and out. That's how I do my own.
I have done some quick paint jobs though. Here's what I did with
those: lay the tire and rim flat after prepping the rim, wrap flashing,
standing up, tightly around the edge of rim and clamp it in place.
Cover the tire around the outside of the flashing and paint inside
of it using low pressure in a HVLP paint gun.

I take a good sized piece of cardboard and cut it to the same arc as the rim. I then position it against the edge of the rim that sticks up above the tire, hold it with one hand, spray with the other, and work around the rim. Works great when tire breakdown is not in the scope of the current job.
