Am I the only one who hates those spires nuts used to retain the instrument panel on a Ford 5000 but also any 1000 series tractor?
Why could they not have provided tapped holes with a thread? Can't be cost.

You can guess what happened , yes in reinstalling the panel it slipped and two wires shorted causing the insulation to burn off.

Yes I know I should have disconnected the battery but --- well you know the rest.

Rant over.

You must have a later tractor.
The early ones had a rubber gasket that slipped around the tach hole in the cowel and used machine screws (10-32?) to hold the tach in place. There were threaded brass inserts in the rubber for the machine screws
You could probably find the rubber gasket at a boneyard and use a rat tail file to modify the cowel. I don't know when they made the change.
The rubber gasket is more protective of the wires.
This gasket is missing one insert.

Thanks Ultradog, suddenly this is making sense. My tractor is an early 5000 built December 1965, first registered January 1966 and yes it does have those cut outs in the cowl as in your photo.

When I came to re-install the instruments I bought a new gasket off a local dealer, now looking at the old gasket I can see the retaining screws in the material.

Guess I will have to find a better condition old style one.

Thank you lesson learn't, shame the dealer didn't point out the change!
