power steering pump rebuild or replace

1841 Ford

New User
I have an 1841 industrial with a power steering problem. The power steering fluid comes shooting out of the top of the reservoir of the pump when in use and for a minute or so after it is turned off. Air is getting in there somehow, is it the pump( worn out ) or do you think it is something else? I can't find a rebuild kit anywhere and I can't find a replacement pump. I found one pump that might work but I don't want to spend $655 without being sure it's the pump. Thanks for any help you can give me.

If everything else fails, and you can modify the bracket a bit, look into replacing the pump with a 70s pickup pump. Roland Jackson put me onto this and it works like a charm.

Check & replace the filter first. If you still have a problem you could have air in the system. You might want to try jacking up the front, getting the tire just off the ground then turn left and right about 10 times. Then check the fluid level refill if necessary. You can check to see how much movement is in the shaft if it move a lot then the pump needs a rebuild. If so check the yards for older fords late 1950's-60's tbirds, mustangs etc. They used the Eaton pumps as well and are a great source for parts. Then just match up the O rings. 1841 you still have the half steering wheel and cable steering on that?

Thanks to all of you for the help, I'll replace the filter and see what happens. Sorry it took so long to reply, family emergency took me out of town. Thanks again!
