860 runs lousy

Howdy, my 860 and I bushogged last summer running decent using rebuilt Schebler carb. started often over winter. Last three weeks barely start, idle, die when given gas. Good spark, compression, new plugs, wires, cond, cap, rotor, coil, but hardly run. So, bought new Zenith direct replace from this site but ran about same maybe worse. opened carb to ensure floats not dislodged. Appears good.
Getting anxious with growing season coming.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Dave

hmm.. you say spark and comp and the rest is good. runs bad. swap in new carb.. still runs bad.

I think I'd be looking at spark again. and fuel flow!

Have you checked the air filter and intake tube to make sure they're not clogged up with a mouse nest or something similar?

You need a lesson in trouble shooting 101.
#1 check your spark. Make sure it is a good blue/white in color and will jump at least 1/4 inch at ALL 4 plug wires.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you get a good steady flow of gas for a few minutes. Catch the gas to check for water/dirt etc.
#3 check the air cleaners. It is one of the most neglected parts of a tractor. It could be full of dirt/water/ice
That all said always trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around

thanks all.
new fuel valve on tank, good flow to carb, drained tank, cleaned and new oil in breather last fall but tractor runs same when carb unhooked from tube, checked spark from coil but not from plugs will check.

Also if your not running the auto lite 437 plugs you may want to get a set. They seem to work better with this crap gas we now have

I installed autolite 437 's gapped at .026 they turned black soot in a minute.
I Was told to use Shell mid to high octane,
only copper core plug wires, and gap at .020

Plugs should be gaped at 0.025. Black soot tells me the carb is set WAY to rich so your running way to rich and that will cause your problem big time. Do you have black smoke out the exhaust?? How does it run with the air cleaner tube off?? I also bet choking it hurt the way it runs due to running to rich

You absolutely don't need mid or high test fuel in your tractor.87 octane works fine.437 or 216 plugs both work well.Gap them at.025.Points clean and shiney,.025 gap also.

As OLD says"way too rich".Could be a sticking float, dirty idle circuit in carb.Or just way out of adjustment.

held each plug wire from dist to block with little spark if any from all 4.
third wire unplugged was only one that actually made it run worse.
will clean and reset points.
strange thing...now when I shut off key, she keeps running the same. Guess it needs switch and assume it has nothing to do with lousy running

1st,DO NOT use a file on the points!Don't use sand paper on them either.Use coarse paper of some kind.Is this tractor 6 volt or 12 volt?If 6 volt and it continues to run when switched of,ignition switch is no good.If 12 volt alt.then it is back feeding to the ignition system.
