what wt. oil to use in a 4000 ford gas 3 cyl.?

Engine or transmission or hyds??? Sort of hard to help you with out knowing where your putting the oil.
Engine most any good grade muti weight oil like say a 20W-50 or a 10W-40
Transmission a UTF oil is what I would use for both the transmission and hyds then meets ford specs

i'd put 15w40 or 10w30 in the engine depending on how north you are.

for rear of the engine.. UTF meeting m2c134 spec

Agreed. A high quality Diesel rated oil is best for this old gasser.

I also find it easier to just stock less oil types too.

I have 15w40 going in all but 2 tractors and 2 trucks. My 2 powerstrokes are running 5w40 syn, and I have 2 fords.. an 850 and a 4000 4 cyl that i've rebuilt the head after having stuck valves.. and those are getting cheap walmart 10w30 syn. the other ? 18 tractors get 15w40 and none complain at all. red, green orange, orany-red, yellow, blue, grey, etc....
