860 in the snow

Merry Christmas to all. Next, a disclaimer: Do not attempt to run a snowblower behind your tractor if you do not have a live PTO. Even with a live PTO, these old Fords have too fast of a reverse speed. You can run a snowblower behind your live PTO old Ford depending on your level of patience. Now that thats out of the way, here is my 1955 860 with a 76" two stage snowblower after cleaning my yard. It's wearing gray primer on the engine, trans, and rear housing and incorrect blue and white on the sheetmetal as I was too slow this past summer with my cosmetic restoration and had to put it back together to work this winter. Next spring, back apart it comes to continue the cosmetics. I rebuilt the engine last winter and its running great with lots of power. Definately need the wheel weights.

That set-up looks like it should handle the snow at a fairly good speed. I think that I would lower the spout a little in order to reduce the amount of wind blown snow.

Very nice ! I was wondering what the four wheel drive set up was. You can disregard my question on the "other" forum. Merry Christmas !

Nice set up. It should work perfectly!

I have a 660 with a snow blower and plow on it. I completely agree with you. Without the live PTO, the blower would be useless. My 660 is way too fast in reverse for more than about 3 inches of powder. But you can inch up on a snow pile or just move a foot or two at at a time. Sure beats a shovel on snow over 12" that my plow won't handle.

My 660

I use my snow plow for most of the work. The 60 inch snow blower is used for anything deeper than about 10 inches. It does take patience, but it works. The weight hanging out the back is a plus.

I replied in classic view with a picture, but it won't display in modern. I tried this reply in modern view. The front axle is a Sherman front wheel assist conversion from the late 50's. This website filter also will not let me use the whole name of the conversion.

A genuine first class snow remover. It looks like you have a 1200# set of weight weights that will fit 24 inch rims. It has been said that these weights would not work on a 28 inch rims as the back side of the weight will hit the wheel disc before the weight tightens up on the weight disc, as the ag wheels are not concave enough. Apparently not true!

The weights are the 1200 lb set. I do have another Ford with 24" rims, but I have not tried to see if these would mount up. My 860 has power adjust wheels, so the mounting plate has to be oriented correctly inside the rim to allow mounting.
