860 Starter Removal

(quoted from post at 21:52:35 12/15/13) Do I need to remove the oil filter before I remove the starter on the Ford 860?
hat? If the starter will come out with filter in place, the answer is no. If it won't come out without removing the filter, then the answer is yes. Pretty simple isn't it?

You have to remove the filter to get the starter out of a 640.You cant get the band off to check the brushes.Block drain is in the way.You will need a curved wrench to get the bolt out near the block.I have not worked on an 800 so cant answer.Service manual isnt much help.It say the oil filter has to be removed on the diesel engine Thats all.

Your response is an example why I don't like this discussion board. I asked a question to see, if based on others experience, what problems they may have encountered while removing the starter on a Ford 860. If you don't have a specific answer to the question then don't comment.

Comments are free....no charge. My response was prompted by my own thoughts that "I could have removed it (& the filter if necessary) in less time than it took to post the question"......so I guess you might say that I didn't think it was much of a technically challenging question. I suppose that if I were at work and couldn't get to my tractor & had a few minutes to play on the computer, I might consider killing time by asking such a question, but then would have rejected the idea, as so simple that I would be embarrassed to ask. But then I have always heard that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. Hopefully someone provided you with a good answer and you will come back again.

And he didn"t specify which filter he has on the 860- the canister style or a spin-on. The difference in the type of filter could easily determine whether or not removal is required in order to remove the starter.
