Im thinking of rebuilding my gasser, and the flywheel teeth are worn pretty bad. I have a diesel, bad block. Will the flywheel interchange? Thanks. PS somewhere on cl is a ford forklift with 4 wheel drive. $4500 I cant remember where its at. Thanks and have a great day

With a little heat from an acet torch (on the ring gear) you can knock it off quite easily; same (but reversed) for installing replacement -- no need to change the whole flywheel. But note there are a different number of teeth on ring gear for diesel vs. gas

Not for a 4 cylinder 172. Gas/Diesel same ring gear from 1939 through 1964. N's, NAA, X00, X01, Prior Thousand series. Starter ring gears all one part number.

If you don't want to swap the ring gear out yourself, most automotive machine shops will do it for a nominal fee. You might want to have the flywheel turned at the same time if you have a single plate clutch.
