detecting which pistion ring is cracked

i have a Ford 5000 and I suspect a cracked ring as the engine is missing and blowing back through the dipstick. How do I detect which cylinder is the problem?

Very simple. Pull one plug at a time. When it stops then you know which cylinder is causing the blow back. No compression as in plug out no blow back

You are assuming it is a gasser.
But there were a lot more diesels in that model than gassers. Mike Groom has the better answer as it applies to both.

Ah but with a diesel it is a heck of a lot harder to check compression also and takes a special heavier built gauge to do so. Plus since he did not say we can only take guesses

Why bother trying to figure out which cylinder it is? Pull the head, drop the pan, yank ALL the pistons, and re-ring them all.

If it's a diesel, and you really must know quickly, cut the fuel to one cylinder at a time by loosening injector lines at the injectors. The weak cylinder will be the one that has the least affect on engine speed when the line is cracked.

hey guys thanks for the help. I don't have a compression tester and I am out on a farm in OUdtshoorn, South Africa so think maybe the removing of the fuel line will work. so thanks a stack

Kill each cylinder either plug wire or injector line. A dead cylinder will produce less pressure. If it's missing already that would be the one.
