134 rear main seal

I'm rebuilding my Jubilee (134 engine) and I'm install the new rear main seal. I have two questions, on the rubber seal which way does the lip face? toward the rear or front. The one I removed face lip to the rear, which is opposite everything I was taught, unless this is a dust seal then it should face out. Question 2 is how much will the rope seal swell, I have purchased two different brands and they sit deeper in the grove then I would expect.

I always buy CNH rear main side seals do not like the aftermarket ones,Maybe someone out there can answer your lip question.I was taught the same as you about the lip.

With oil and grease seals, always point the lip toward what you are trying to contain.

Rope seals swell but you will need a micrometer to measure just how much.

The question about a rope seal swelling with oil,,, I would not depend on oil swelling it nor would I move on assuming it would.... I would think its as big as its ever gonna be out of the box...

If you go to the search box and type in rope and author hobo,nc then ford in the forum you will find what I have to say about rear seals...

Its a lot of work to go after a leaker I would be 100% confident about the instillation NOW...

Just did the rear main on a 172, replaced the rope with a neoprene, crank in place. The rope came out in pieces the replacement I greased up and went right in. Fixed the problem. Like others have said, lip towards the oil side.

Thanks to all for all the help. It turns out I was trying to replace what I found instead of doing a repair, apparently the hands before me had packed a rope seal into the oil drain grove then installed a rubber seal facing rearward. Thinking this was correct I couldn't get the rope seal to fill the oil groove. Now with my head removed from the clouds,it has now been repaired and apologize to the purist, with a CNH rubber seal. Thanks again

Glad you found a solution - Amazing what you find done to these old tractors by folks either too poor to fix it right or grease monkeys that just don't care.
