I think the elbow you are referring to only works on the 172 engine built after 1958 for the 8 and 901 series tractor with the bigger 1 5/8" exhaust pipe. I guess I am not aware of any 1 1/2" vertical exhaust built like the original

Sorry, my mistake.
One question- The newer replacement manifolds accept either the larger or smaller elbows for the muffler inlet side. If that is true of all the manifolds then would it not be possible to use the larger cast elbow on the muffler inlet, the larger pipe muffler (both of which are readily available) and then the rest of the arrangement for the x01 I described above?
Probably replacing too many parts but might work unless there is something else about the x00 series I am forgetting about. -Will

Here's a parts diagram of the vert. exhaust kit showing the cast elbow(#8)...I pulled this off of the Partspring website under the 801 series, but I would think your 900 has the same upsized muffler outlet.
