860 Conversion to 12 volt

I have a new battery in my 860 but it turns over so slow. My 960 has been converted. On the 960 I just touch the starter and it is running. Is there something I need to do to make the 860 start better on 6 volts or should I convert to 12?If I convert to 12 how do I handle the lights?

First thing to do is check the cables to and from the solenoid. I had a cable that looked ok, but once I took it off to replace I could see about half the strands were connected to the cable end (could not see that easily when it was on tractor). Less conductors connected to the end equals more resistance which yields less current flow (amps). Right? I=V/R. Volts is constant (6), resistance is higher, then amps will be less.

6 volt systems need bigger gauge cables than 12v to function properly. Said another way, the cheapy cables from the discount store designed for 12v may be too light of gauge affecting the starting performance.

If the cables are in good shape and equal in gauge to your good running tractor, then your starter could have issues, at which point I would have it rebuilt before converting to 12v.

Start with the cables...

One other thought...unless you are having recurring issues with the generator not charging, I would not convert to 12v just to do it. However, if you are having lots of charging issues, an alternator can help to fix that problem.

As far as lights go, just put 12v bulbs in them if you convert. If the 6v starter is in good condition it will last a good while (unless abused) on 12v.
