841 Governor how to test? Parts avail?

Hi,

now that the 640 is on its wheels again, I am turning my
attention to the 841 I just acquired. Needs lift cover overhaul,
but more importantly it stalls under load

Starts. Runs, but as you let out the clutch with a bush hog on the
back, it stalls. If you baby the clutch out slowly, it'll pick up rpms
and run, unless you hit a patch of heavy stuff and then it dies.

I will go through the fuel system this weekend and probably
service/overhaul the carburetor to eliminate that as a source f
trouble; it has become my habit now to tear down, clean, and
service the carb as the first or nearly first thing I do when I buy a
new tractor. I seem to like doing it.

I do not know how to test the governor, short of tearing it down,
too, which I do not wish to do unless absolutely necessary. Also,
this site does not list repair parts for the governor, and its about
$250 from CNH if available at all.

hints and suggestions welcomed.

ou can see & feel it in the linkage if a governor is doing something or not..hand & eyes are the tools.

after you get the ignition and carb straightened away,

governor-drive up and down a hill. should climb smoothly,
and try to slow you down going downhill.
Flatlander? with a healthy throttle setting, when you are
driving steadily along, step on both brakes. A 800's brakes are no match for an 800's motor
and good governor. It should give a roar and keep going.

Hello William , Since No New Parts brought it up and before you ask a 600/800 governor(ball type) and a 601/801 governor(flat roller type) are not the same . I have only had the 601/801 roller type just stick from sitting where as the 600/800 ball type will wear flat spots in the balls and will not work as JMOR says you feel the governor lever move back forth if it is free . Thanks Tony

Check the throttle linkage. With the engine dead, the governor arm and the throttle shaft must reach wide open at exactly the same time. This is true of nearly all gas engines with mechanical governor.

When you get your owner's manual, (repros are readily available), somewhere around pages 53,54,55 is the section on adjusting the throttle linkage. You should go through that before digging into the governor.
