Most auto parts stores will test them for free. Did you have it tested?

no I had a new one laying here so tried it first but still no go

im thinking it the battery sensor that set behind the battery

Do you know what alternator is installed on that tractor? I thought they were all internally regulated at that point and there was no more battery temp sensor... but obviously if the sensor is installed, I'm incorrect.
I'd start by checking wiring and making sure that there's an excite voltage coming down the indicator light's wire with the key on...

The regular, made in the USA, 7810 was made from 88 through 91, but the 7810S (made in Mexico) was made from 93 through 97.
