640 broken fan, plot thickens, overheating

640, fan blade found shattered, gouge in radiator, radiator leaked coolant, tractor overheated

Soldered radiator gouge, cut off broken blade and its mirror opposite on 6 blade fan until new fan arrives.

Radiator full of coolant

temp gauge runs up into red at idle after a few minutes

not at all a big job to swap out/examine water pump (the one that is in there is a new one from this web site installed about 6 months ago) and the thermostat, but is there any troubleshooting I should do before that?

Also: any reason not to paint the rusty battery box with bedliner?

thx

I go for 'quick & dirty' in such situations. Remove top hose & start it....should be a major spray at 16 GPM! Empty in a jiffy!

If the thermostat got real hot that can be enough to cause them to lock up and not open which would cause your problem

yeah. Thought of the possibilty of a faceful of hot ethylene glycol..
yum...

I like the themostat idea. Would like to reurn it to service ASAP.. can
you "exercise" them and get them back to work, or gotta replace?

Yep like I said once to hot they lock closed and so you get a hot running engine

I have replaced many thermostats that were stuck shut and stuck open over the years.Testing in hot water with a meat thermometer is the only way.No boiling.Thermostats should just start to open at marked temperature. In the 50s we had a big coffee mug that had a heater and thermometer in it.It was common to use 160 thermostats in summer and change to 180 in winter for better defrosting. If you have had a thermostat stick open in winter you know what happens.A tuna can makes a good thermostat tester on an electric stove.

pull thermo.. reinstall top port... test as jmor said with ra cap off. will tell you if the pump is moving.
