ford 660

need some help guys! i have a tapping noise the first 3 or 4 seconds when i start. not sure what it is?

Is it a tap or a knock? Its not uncommon to hear the lifters tap a bit as they take up the play in push rod/rocker arm/ valve train. Usually this does not go away, but might get better as things warm up.

My guess is that you are hearing a knock, probably from a worn rod bearing. In the early stages, this knock appears just a you start your engine and goes away as oil pressure builds. Take a look at your oil pressure gauge, does the knock stop as the pressure comes up?

If it is a knock, its a sign that an engine rebuild is in your future. Not a major problem as the 660 - 134 cu. in. Red Tiger engine is an easy rebuild. Well worth the effort

Try to pin point the noise to help us more . A trick my Dad used was to use a 2'chunk off a broom handle or else a 3/4" dowel rod as a noise locator .No kidding ,he could actually tell how well an engine was performing . He was a carrer Ford Moto Co certified mechanic (old school) . I can remember when the first hi-tech engine analizing machine was introduced into the Ford dealership where he worked . He refused to try or trust it to the point the owner gave him an altimatum of going to Fords training school to learn how to operate that machine or quit . Guess what , he quit . Then he went to work at Joy Manufacturing here in Franklin . It was funny that after he had left the dealership , the 2 ow3ners would call & beg him to come in & help the new / younger mechanics figure out a problem with vehicles they were working on . Dad would always carry his dowel rod in his tool chest . Others couldn't believe how he could get those new engines to talk to him thru that dowel rod. So ,you say during the first few seconds after starting your 660 you hear a tapping noise. Have someone help you by sitting on the tractor as you get in position . Try first to place the dowel rod against your ear & against the water pump , then start moving back the side of the engine crank case & head areas after your helper starts the tractor . If the noise only last a few seconds , you'll have check those ares quickly . If the noise stops , shut the tractor off , wait a bit & restart it & try rechecking again . Now if the noise quits once the engines warm , you may have to try this again sometime . Also being that the PTO turns with the engine , you may wanta try the dowel rod test at the PTO pump area . Have you checked your fluid levels ? I do hope this helps . Post back & good luck . God bless , Ken

Perhaps its time for an oil/filter change - Oil thins out over time. Your call but I recommend a diesel grade oil like Rotella 15W40.

at startup, during tapping.. what's oil pressure say?

have you adjusted valves?

when you do. check oiling at head at startup with valve cover off and a temp tank to run with when you adjust them.
