Ok, so with a friends help we found a bad connection from the coil to the points. We fixed that and got it started. But now it does not start reliably and sounds like it is missing when it does run. I am now going to replace the distributer cap and roter. Any other suggestions?

Check the spark plugs first. If they are H10s change to H12s or Autolite 437s.You need a hotter plug with unleaded gas.The OHV engine has a simple ignition system.Learn how it works before buying a lot of new parts.
