801 to replace 2N

Is this an 861? It looks like 5 speed but I can"t tell if it is live PTO. Can anyone else tell?
I need something to replace the 2N while i strip it down for a makeover.
It looks like it has some possible PS leaks as well.
Any comments on pricing and issues with this model are appreciated.
I need to blade snow, shredder, dirt scoop and pull a people wagon.
Does a loader work well on this, if I found one?
Thanks for your input.

It definitely has a 5 speed but there's no way to tell which version (851 or 861) it is without looking at the model number stamped into the transmission housing. An 861 with Live PTO is more valuable than an 851 in my view. You won't need an Overruning Clutch for shredder use like you will need on the 851 or 841. It also has Power Adjust rear rims.
The front axle is still a weak link for FEL use but you will have plenty of power.
It's at least 3 times as much tractor as a 2N. If it starts and runs well I'd say it's worth the $2800.

At that price , well it would be in my yard already . I had looked at a similar 800 series minus the PS locally in Pa & the dealer had it at almost $4,000.00 .Even if it looks like it has a leak , leaks can be fixed at his price . If it runs fairly well without unwanted noises & the hydraulics & 5 spd works good ,welll my advice is : buy it . God bless , Ken

You pretty much can not look at one and tell easily unless you can see the clutch linkage. Of course the only way to be 100$ sure it look at the model number which sits just behind the starter above 2 bolt holes and that flat area

That is WAY more tractor than your 2N. You'd like it. Looks like a pretty decent deal to me... especially if it's an 861. Prices vary regionally. The leaks look more like they're coming from the hydraulic pump area than the steering cylinders, to me. Kinda hard to tell from the pictures though. Too bad you're not a little closer - I'm going to be taking a Fasco 1200 all-hydraulic loader off an 850 my cousin just bought. He has half-tracks to put on the 850, so the loader is going. (has a 7710 with a quick-tach loader, anyway) I'm in n/w WI, if you're interested... It looks like you may be in western IA or eastern NE?

That is a great tractor and if it runs decent the price is right.
If I had to choose between power steering and live PTO I would take the PS two to one.
It does have live hydraulics - just so you know.
Go to John Smith's great website and read his remarks about what to look for when buying a Ford tractor. It is focused on Ns but much of it applys to any Ford.
Also ask the fellows here who know those 5 speeds better than I about testing the transmission for worn detents and shift forks.
If they are ok the tractor will outlast you and your grand children too.

Thanks everyone for your input. If I can get it by the 'Board of Residency' and i get there to inspect before any one of you, I might have to tell Clara the 2N she is getting a big brother.

Yes, live hydraulics would be a welcome addition. Although i do have the Zane Thang for position control, having to stop and lift is working my clutch leg pretty good.

Thanks for reviewing. I'm not sure traveling from east NE to n/w WI is going to be a viable option for the loader even if I get the tractor. But thanks for letting me know, just in case.

The 5 speed has a common problem of jumping out of 3rd gear. 3rd gear is used about 90% of the time and the shift detents get worn which allows it to jump out of gear. If it jumps out and replacing the detent fixes it you're lucky because that's a 15 minute repair. When I got my 861D it jumped out of 3rd but I had to completely disassemble the transmission and replace the 3rd-Rev shift collar. That's a time consuming and expensive job.

You will not believe the difference 2N to 861 w/ps,lpto,live hyd,& 5spd, much more power.I have a 8N and a 861. It may also have remote outlets.
I paid $2500. 10 yrs ago added rear tires much later, was well pleased. Also the tin looks good in the pictures.

With out power steering you won't be happy with a loader. Most 801 5 speeds had live pto You should be able to feel extra resistance when pushing the clutch at about 1/2 way down when releasing the traction part of the clutch.

Where do you come up with that?? I bet if you looked there are probably more 851 made then the 861 due to the fact the live PTO was an option that cost more $$

Can't tell if it is a 861 from picture. The clutch pedal is pretty high though... Only way to really know is to check it out in person.

The price is good if it is in good working order. I paid $4500 for a good 861 this past spring.
