Left the key on my NAA. After re-charging battery, it still won"t start. Replaced the points. Took spark plug out and grounded it with jumper cables to tractor but don"t see any spark when turning her over. Should I see a spark in this situation. I"m at a loss. Getting gas to the carburator.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Replaced the points but did you clean them before installing them. Now day many companies coat to point so they do not go bad on the shelve. Remove the cap rotor and dust cover and turn the ignition on and make sure you have spark at the point by opening them by hand. Be careful or you will find the spark the ouch way. If you do not have spark at the points clean them with the flap from the box they came in. By the way gap them to 0.025. You might also try to hot wire it you may have burned out the ignition switch

put a test lamp in line with the wire going to coil primary. key on and points closed.. lamp should glow. turning her over it should blink.

if no lamp, jump around coil. if that makes lamp.. pull coil for a more indepth ohm meter check.

also check key switch.

in general.. the coils are pretty robust.. keys not so much.

either can fail.

thanks for the suggestions. One thing I forgot to mention, when I was adjusted the points, I accidently left the key on. As I was turning the screw with screwdriver I saw a spark. Does that mean the wiring is all good (including coil) up to the points?

Thanks,

When you say a test lamp, is that something I can buy at a Lowes or auto parts store? Is it something that has aligator clips? I hate to ask dumb questions but I have done much automotive electrical testing.

Thanks,

if you've done a bit of auto electric testing.. then a test lamp should be in your tool box.

it's basically a probe and lamp ad gator clip. clip cator clip to ground usually..a nd then use the probe to find hot.. esentially.

the good ones will work on 6v or 12v. IE.. glow dim on 6 and glow bright on 12...

you don't need that tool.. however. any suitable voltage bulb and wires works fine.

you can make a cheap test lamp with a trailer marker lamp.. 1$ from the flea market.. etc. they have a 168 or 194 bulb in them usually..

Ok, so with a friends help we found a bad connection from the coil to the points. We fixed that and got it started. But now it does not start reliably and sounds like it is missing when it does run. I am now going to replace the distributer cap and roter. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim A

Check the spark plugs first. If they are H10s change to H12s or Autolite 437s.You need a hotter plug with unleaded gas.The OHV engine has a simple ignition system.Learn how it works before buying a lot of new parts.
