Air popping back through intake...

Well first off thanks for all the help on my engine, fired it off twice today after some rebleeding and a bit of starting fluid...engine is a Ford Industrial with FL on the block (4 cyl).

Anyways, after about a 10 minute run, I shut it down to check the fluid levels...let it sit for a bit,

Then fired it back up...still had to give it a shot of ether, but kept it running this time for another 12-15 minutes, then all of a sudden I here a "popping" of air...I pulled the intake hose offf and am getting pressure back up through the intake...

My feeling is possible hole in a piston or a valve stuck open inn the guide...no rattling/mechanical noises...so don't think I broke a valve.

What are you're guys opinions on this before I pull the head this weekend?

Thanks.

Could be a sticking or bent intake valve... or if you're extraordinarily blessed... a burnt valve. Pull the rocker cover and look for a valve not returned home or slack/bent push rods and if that doesn't show anything, pull the head...

Pull the valve cover like Rod mentioned, you may have an exhaust push rod out of place, or arm loose or broke. If exhaust can't get out the remaining pressure will cause a loud pop when intake valve opens.

red tiger?

thumb test with starter to find any cyls puffing funny.

pull push rod cover. look for bent or thrown off lifter pushrods.

lastly. if you find a hung open valve. remove valve train and douse it with atf and acetone. use a deadblow hammer and work it back down then roll it back up with starter.. keep doing this.

might save you a head job.

I had valves stuck so bad I had to hammer them out that way.

good luck / post back

Always a fun day around here...mercy.

Pulled the rocker cover, everything looked okay...spun the engine over while watching the valve train..heard two "pops", then everything seemed normal...no more popping through the intake at all while turning it over.

I wonder, for as long as this sat (good 15 years) if some carbon came off the piston and got into a valve seat?

When I first fired it up the other day and lot of "carbon flakes" were shooting out the exhaust pipe.

Think I'll change the oil and try it again.

Thanks gents!

Hi
Not sure if you are aware that motor is a 4 cylinder Fordson based, industrial 220 cubic inch.
With FL on the head it"s one of the last type made on that block style.
The tractor version was only made from about 1962 to 64, FL is an improved flow head.
I think the industrial/ truck series, might of run a bit longer than tractor blocks, before the 2700 series came out in 65 ish.
