Ford 4000 Issues

I've got a 1964 Ford 4000 4 cylinder gas tractor. My son hooked up a 12 volt battery charger to the tractor over the weekend due to a dead battery. Problem is this is a 6 volt system. I have since replaced the battery. The tractor will turn over VERY slowly like the battery is dead but that is it. Something else must have been damaged due to applying the battery charger incorrectly. Looking for any ideas of where to start troubleshooting this problem. Thanks!

if he just hooked a 12v charger up to a 6v battery and charged it. and nothing onthe tractor was on.. then the battery is the only casualty.

slow turn over?

is the new bat charged? 6v bats don't move often and setting on a shelf 6m may have depleated it.

charg ethe 6v batter. while it is charging.. clean up the bat cables and terminal ends and ground point to chassis.

then try her again.

unless there is something else to the story we havn't heard.....

I went ahead and charged the battery with the same result. The solenoid was chattering as it sounded like the starter was turning very slowly. Went ahead and replaced the solenoid as it is a very inexpensive. Now the solenoid makes a click and that is it. The starter does nothing. Is it possible the starter is locked up? Any advice on further troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

starter could be toast, but not from applying 12v. How did it work before?

Did you really check over the cables? On mine it would crank over OK. Replaced the cables because they had wonky ends and did not realize how bad they were once off.

Now it spins like it is on turbo.

If it was ok before this incident, check and recheck all main (heavy gauge) cables.
