Just spit balling here but I'm thinking you're talking about the spring that pushes up on the gear shift? If so, that is to help gear selection on a 5-speed. If it's a 4-speed, the spring is to keep the shifter from feeling sloppy.

For later models, reply back and I'm sure Jerry can put you on the right track as to its purpose.
