851 Hydraulic linkage adjustment

I'm a tractor rookie and having some trouble getting my linkage adjusted according to the protocol in the IT manual. I can get the draft control adjustment, but position control is way off. If I make up all the distance with the position control rod, the control lever only goes half way up before the control valve land hits the retainer plate on the cylinder housing. Is this right?

I just rebuilt the lift on 4000--4 Cyl. You have a turnbuckle to adjust quadrant. Does IT show it? If so does it tell how to turn to adjust? I don't have a manual. Read question below. Maybe we can help each other.

Thanks Mickey

Hmmmm...I found the procedure in the I&T manual to be pretty straight forward.

Start by positioning the lift arms. The way I had the top cover mounted in the vice, I was able to take a measurement from a nearby cabinet. The washer trick did not work for me to hold the arms "locked" so I loosened the retaining bolt, slid the arm out a bit and stuck a bolt sideways between the lift arm and cover. Then tightened the retaining bolt to hold the arm.

Put the selector lever in draft mode and move the touch control (quadrant lever that controls lift) to the full "up" position. Use a micrometer and measure the distance from the top of the cylinder housing to the control valve. Adjust via turnbuckle.

Put the selector position control and move the touch control to the full "down" position. Measure the same gap as in the first step, but adjust by turning the bolt with the spring on it that is attached to the arm with the cam pin. Make sure to hold the plate that is held by the pin with a crescent wrench while you loosen the nut. With the nut loose adjust the gap using the bolt.

The two adjustments are made in different places. Draft control with the turnbuckle and position control with the bolt/spring/nut/pin/plate combo. They do affect each other.

The Draft and Position Control adjustments affect each other- you can't adjust just one of them. If you are unable to get one of them adjusted correctly you have bent or worn linkage.

Thanks guys,

Texas and Cbrown, the linkage wear was/is the issue. When I loosened the position control spring to the point needed to adjust it to spec, the swivel on the draft control fork would bind as I worked the touch control lever. This is why I thought I had screwed something up. The draft control fork had too much play on the control shaft, so I made a bushing for it. This tightened everything up enough to get the adjustments close, and it works fine now. I will probably need to replace it all some time down the road.

Miner/Mickey...if you didn't already get an answer, on mine lengthening the turnbuckle pushes the control valve in which should make the lift work earlier in the quadrant.
