spark plug boots

i bought a set of spark plug wires off this site for my 70 ford 4000 3 cyl. i have talked to them they said there is nothing wrong with them. i have all my plug wire pushed on to spark plugs good and tight. the boots are pushed down in to place in spark plug hole. the number 3 plug wire boot keeps popping out of hole when engine is started. the wire is on plug good and tight. if i dont push boot party into hole it stays intact but once i push boot into hole and start engine it pops out my number 1 and 2 does not do this just number 3 any explanations for this? i tryed my old original set of wires and they do not do this just the new ones. thx

I suggest you pull that boot off and take a look inside. Is the metal clip in the correct position? I've seen them off center, then the plug tip goes around it. Usually if this is the case, you can push the wire into the boot and maybe twist it to get things lined up.

Number 3 spark plug gasket is leaking. Try tightening the spark plug a little as leaking combustion pressure is blowing the boot out of the head. Joe

can i ask why the original boot and plug wire isnt blowing out? i will xcheck gasket but makes no sense. what did u mean btdc ? i know that means below top dead center but dont understand what you meant? thx

Hawk,

Obviously, I don't know why the old worked and the new doesn't, but I've had the problem of spark plug wires blowing off my 1973 3 cylinder gas engine Ford 2000 in the past. Every time it is was because compression was getting past the spark plug and blowing the wire off. I've re-torqued the spark plugs and it has fixed the problem every time.

BTDT is meant to be an abbreviation for "Been there, done that". Sorry for the confusion.

Good luck with your troubleshooting.

I just replaced the wires for my 1973 3400 from this site and had the same issue with the boots. Tightening the spark plug and using decent force to push the boot on seemed to correct the issue. I was getting some blow by on one of the plugs.

If you don't believe it's your spark plug leaking pour a little bit of liquid dish soap down the hole and see what happens.
You'll think the Lawrence Welk Show was on.
The old boots were probably loose enough for the air to escape past.

with the quality of todays parts, which includes
sealing washers on plugs that need them or the machining on ones that don't...
UD's test is good practice on all engines.
We are paying dearly for all our HP today,(gas)
might as well get ALL of it, not let it sneak away.
And on all engines, a careful cleaning of the engine plug seat area
is always needed. Most used plugs I remove have just been tightened down on the existing crud that's been
there probably forever.
